Question:
Hello I am new to this website thing, so please have mercy. I have a
question about "full eye" contact lens, they are called "sclera lens." I
just started to wear standard colored lenses and I am very interested in
getting some more wild type of lens. Are they ok to wear for 4 hours or so?
Does anyone have a personal horror story? Does anyone own some? Wear them?
Good points, bad points? Any suggestion about Novelty Contact Lens?
Answer:
If you're normally a contact lens wearer (as in, you have a prescription)
then you'll have better luck with any sort of "wild" lenses - if you're used
to wearing lenses anyway and *have* to wear them, then you might as well
have some fun. If you're not - as in, you're wearing them for show only - my
advice to you is, don't.
Novelty contact lenses are usually "soft" lenses, and often made up mostly
of water. This means they are very permeable, and thus prone to harbouring
infection - unless they are single wear lenses of course. Eye infection can
be *very bad news* - not only can it cause discomfort, but permanent eye
damage too. The stories about "eye eating bugs" have kinda turned into urban
folklore but it's a fact that some infections can permanently damage the
surface of your eye, causing corneal problems that can lead to impaired
vision. Your eyes are precious and you only get one set. I should know - I
lost seventy percent of my eyesight when I was 21. Not due to infection but
an incurable eye condition caused by being highly myopic. I *have* to wear
contact lenses, else I wouldn't be able to focus on anything (with the
eyesight I have left) that was further away than three inches in front of my
nose. Specs are better suited to people with central vision, as the
placement of glasses on one's face usually means that the center of the
visual field is the bit that is mostly in focus. Unfortunately I have very
little central field, so contacts, which are placed directly on the eye
(heh, no shit ;-) ) can give better peripheral focus. Also, specs for
someone of my prescription can be very very heavy which used to cause me
intense headaches through pressure on my nose. So I'm stuck with contacts.
I sincerely wish I wasn't - I've had to wear them since I was twelve.
