Question:
Does anyone have any good suggestions on where to get prescription safety
eye wear? I'm currently using my normal glasses which no one seems to mind,
but I'd like to keep these glasses in excellent condition.
I went to LensCrafters today but they had a sad sad selection - none of them
what I wanted. I just want safety glasses that look like safety glasses (but
high-quality of course).
Preferably a Canadian supplier.
Answer:
If you're talking about flying metal and cutting oil spray, then I'd
go for a pair of over-glasses over my prescriptions. I want
substantial protection, and I want side screens. I also don't care
what it looks like. Prescription glasses are expensive too, and I
don't really want them getting sprayed and spattered directly.
My shooting glasses (bright yellow, but they do clear too) are
lightweight with big square lenses that don't disturb the optics.
There's really no downside, if you get a decent lightweight pair, to
wearing two pairs simultaneously.
I'm strongly short sighted, so the edges of my lenses are thick. This
causes enough trouble with small frames, and it's impossible for me to
get a prescription lens that's big enough to be a useful safety lens.
My cycling glasses are a pair of Bolle Edge. These are tinted, but
again they do clear lenses too. They're an interesting design - a big
one-piece wrap around lens, with the prescription on a separate lens
insert behind, mounted on the same nosepiece. It's a good solution to
awkward prescriptions.
I don't actually wear safety glasses much anyway. Most of my risky
workshop time is either woodworking or grinding, so I'd usually go for
a full face shield. It's a better view, and less sweaty !
