Sudden Blurred Vision

Question:
Has there been any reports, or other information, that the statin cholesterol medicine Lipitor has (possibly) caused blurred vision or large floaters ?

Answer:
First, if you are having or have had a sudden onset of blurred vision and large floaters, turn off your computer and call your eye doctor. Right now. Meanwhile: There were some early reports that, in some people, some of the time, statin drugs cause transient elevations of blood sugar which can cause transient blurred vision. It appeared to be associated with people who were "boardline" diabetic and did not alter their diet along with taking the statin drug. This "side effect" is no longer mentioned as an "adverse effect" in the drug literature, which would mean it is either exceedingly rare or the initial reports were anecdotal and not confirmed. Not heard of floaters. More recently, there's evidence that statins might actually help vision by reducing the incidence of age related macula degeneration. Your best source for identifying the cause of your symptoms is first with your prescribing physician who may order blood tests and, of course, your eye doctor.
