Question:
Am I crazy or is there an absence of indemity insurance for vision care?
It looks as though every vision plan I have examined is captitated with a
small co-payment. If that IS the case, what happens to the poor doc who
can't get enrolled in a managed care closed panel? Just curious.

Answer:
The fact of the matter is that not just vision care or eye care, but most of
health care is leaning towards managed care. You mentioned some of the
weaknesses to the managed care system. Actually not all managed care entities
are fot profit with stockholders and high admin costs. Many are non-profit
and are the leaders in the quality assurance arena.
Actually there are some positive aspects about managed care. Without
some form of cost containment mechanism in place, our nation's medicare
system will go bankrupt and most of us will not have govt sponsored health
care when we reach 65... but then that is only a small piece of the pie.
With our national health care sped
spending at about 15% our national GDP and climbing towards 20%, this is just
out of control.
unfortunately, the US is probably not going to go for a total health
care system reform towards a single payor system, but the managed competition
that was proposed by Clinton seems to be well underway although his bill never
went through... it's just the force of the market that keeps pushing it
forward....
