Question:
I was diagnosed Type 2 on 28 Dec with 340 Bg. That day, I
had blurred vision but the Diabetes Care Center
representative said it was temporary (something about
affecting the lense). However, I have had blurred vision
ever since, but today (knock on wood) it seems to be
somewhat clearer. My Bg has been 113-150 over the past
week. Does it take a couple weeks for blurred vision to
dissipate after having Bg that high? I am concerned about
permanent sight loss. Any experience about Vision Care Center?
Answer:
Visual abnormalities are a common side affect of prolonged high blood
glucose (BG); from my personal experience, it can take several
MONTHS for the vision to settle back to a steady-state
condition ... AFTER getting your BGs under control. Following
my diagnosis in 1979 (and blurred vision was one of the
symptoms that led me to consult a doctor), it took me a good
three months for my vision to return to normal; during that 3+
month period my vision changed a signifigant amount numerous times
(with no predictable pattern). Meanwhile, I had my BGs under
excellent control within the first three weeks following my
diagnosis.
I was fortunate to find an
optometrist who had a special interest in researching this
phenomenon; even better, his office was directly across the
street from my workplace. He had me come in for a visual
acuity check once a week during that three-month period
(and never charged me a penny).
Get your diabetes under control, and then have some patience;
your vision should (eventually) settle back to being consistent.
