Question:
Anyone knows a good vision insurance in California.
I am interested in a vision plan only (not as part of
medical/dental plans). Appreciate your suggestions...
Answer:
If you are thinking of buying vision insurance as an individual, try a
different approach. Instead, use a HEALTH CARE FLEXIBLE SPENDING ACCOUNT
(HCFSA) plan, a method of using pre-tax dollars to pay for health care.
See your tax advisor, or look it up in your federal tax packet, or go to
the IRS website for more info.
The plan is simple: figure out how much you plan on spending on health
care (or just vision care) and that money is "withheld" from your
taxable income. Put the money away in a savings account if you'd like
for even more savings. You can turn a $500 annual expense into a
cost-to-you of $375. And then, pay your doctor in cash ask for a
paperwork-free (you *will* need an itemized statement) reduced fee for
service----save even more!
Or you can buy a vision plan for $300- 400 per year and pay deductibles
and extra add-ons. Any way to look at it, buying vision insurance will
cost you more.
IMHO, for most people, health insurance is one of the biggest scams of
the times. (Except, perhaps, for major medical/catastrophic health care
coverage, or if you are a heavy user of the medical industry, and, of
course, the oil/gasoline industry. But I digress.......)
